Sustainable drainage system in King's Park, Glasgow
Sustainable drainage system in King's Park, Glasgow

Investment project code: 5

The Clyde and Loch Lomond area is facing increasing flood risks. There are currently around 98,000 homes and businesses at risk from flooding, and this may increase to 130,000 by 2080 due to climate change.

These extreme weather events affect the lives of Glaswegians, communities, homes and businesses, particularly within vulnerable areas, such as Drumchapel, Maryhill and Summerston, Possilpark, Bridgeton and Dalmarnock.

This project, together with local residents will develop a series of natural flood defenses that can reduce flood risks while providing additional positive benefits to affected communities.

Some of the interventions will include new street trees, woodland and sustainable drainage systems, using nature for managing floods, while increasing access to quality green spaces. If you are part of a community affected by flooding, please reach out to co-design these new vital projects.

For more information visit treesasinfrastructure.com and watch this video.

Location: Drumchapel, Maryhill and Summerston, Possilpark, Bridgeton and Dalmarnock. Additional areas will be identified within the project scope.

Proposed on behalf of: TreesAI Glasgow Partnership

I see that funding is also confirmed now from IRNS (https://www.nature.scot/doc/investment-ready-nature-scotland-irns-grant-scheme-successful-projects). Can I therefore check what aspects of the project would be additional funding that Riverwoods would provide that you want be able to achieve through IRNS. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the comment. We have indeed secured some funding through IRNS. However, the total budget for the pilot is larger than the IRNS funding and includes many aspects, such as collaborating with external legal entities to support commercial agreements, ecosystem services modelling capacity, and capacity for the detailed design of Nature-based Solutions that will be implemented. We are happy to provide a detailed breakdown during the re-visiting of the application proposal.

what proportion of the outline proposals are on land-holdings who are participating partners in this application? How much of these landholdings are commercially owned as opposed to being in public hands?

All projects in the portfolio are on public land, and Glasgow City Council (GCC) is among the partners in Building a flood-resilient Glasgow. The partnership includes private entities and agencies; the complete list will be available shortly in the technical report published on this page.
